This painting was completed following the Old Masters' tradition steps: mixing earth pigments with oils to make paint; applying a colour ground to the canvas, sketching the outline of the image, an underpainting thick in places (in particular areas that are illuminated), many layers of thin glazes.

A symbolic painting created with the Old Masters' techniques. The figure on the right represents the qualities required to mantain good friendship -eg. kindness, discretion, fortitude and generosity. The figure on the left is holding a clock portraying the time, and the effort needed to cultivate and nurture 'friendship'. The monkey portrays a part of our inner self with the power to jeopardise even magical and beautiful relationships. The Hsinbyume Pagoda continues to exist despite having been smashed in a number of earthquakes since 1836. In this painting, the shrines represent our life experiences, good and bad. The cracks in the walls are a symbol of life hardship, and the physical and emotional grief our bodies suffer in our lifetime. The figures inside the shrines stand for the individual and social resilience, and the happy and sad memories shared with long-term friends.
